The Ricetto of Candelo
The Ricetto of Candelo is a late medieval fortified structure built by the local community between XIII and XIX century. It is not a
castle of a noble man, but a village highly wanted and built by local population to store and defend goods of the whole community, wine and corn. It
has been well preserved until nowadays with its own original features really thanks to its function of wine cellar for the community: the village was
never permanently inhabited, therefore it never changed due to living necessities.
The majority of the 200 or so living cells inside the ancient walls of Ricetto are private and some of them house atelier of artists,
shops, restaurants, exhibitions, shop windows of local tastes and flavours. Cell property of the City of Candelo are instead part of Sistema
Museale Integrato (Integrated Museum System) that offers allover the year culture events, exhibitions, music events and traditions; one of these
cells houses the point of sales of Enoteca Regionale della Serra (Regional Wine shop of Serra), based in the Castle of Roppolo.
Among the great cultural and tourist heritages of Biellese, the Ricetto is a european uniqueness, certified as one of the 100 nicest villages of
Italy and appointed as Orange Flag by Touring Club Italiano and was included in the integrated circuits of Gemme del Piemonte (Gems
of Piedmont) and Borghi Sostenibili del Piemonte (Sustainable Villages of Piedmont).
